Legend Stones

Created:

Special Emblems created by the B-DaMage.

There are twelve Legend Stones in total, and they are divided in half, the light stones and the dark stones.

While only the light six have slots in the stone slab used to summon the B-DaMage, and thus only these six are technically required, other Legend Stones of varying elements exist, representing the B-DaMage's other powers. Marda-B originally acquired them all, letting him contact the B-DaMage and other gods. He created six Emblem Holding Units for the Legend Stones he did not give to his followers.

The light stones consist of Fire, Wind, Ice, Earth, and Water, as well as Life.

The dark stones consist of Lightning, Steel, Gold, Wood, and Poison, as well as Death.

The Legend Stones in light and dark pairs are as follows:

Aspect Stone Axis Ancient Bearer Modern Bearer Zodiac
Power Fire Light Khoda Yamato Sagittarius
Lightning Dark Model Jupiter Enjyu Leo
Control Wind Light Selene Yamato Gemini
Steel Dark Model Hephaestus Liena Libra
Accuracy Ice Light Anhu & Guilong Wen Cancer
Gold Dark Model Yanluo Cain Capricorn
Balance Earth Light Model Ceres Bull Taurus
Wood Dark Model Izanami Li Virgo
Speed Water Light Sargaas Terry Pisces
Poison Dark Arma Haja Scorpio
Potential Life Light Atenai Aquras Aries
Death Dark Model Hera Biarce Aquarius

The Legend Stones are capable of altering any B-daman and giving them emblem-holding capacity, strengthening them greatly and providing their users with special abilities of the relevant element.

Disclaimer: The Legend Stones originate from the Battle B-daman manga, but only the Fire, Wind, Ice, Earth, and Water Stones are named but six are shown in total. The Life Stone and everything else on this page are my own creation and part of my personal worldbuilding for Battle B-daman.

B-daworld

Created:

This is the world of Battle B-daman as it appears in my worldbuilding and in my various projects. I developed it in Wonderdraft, basing the landmasses and some of the locations on the show's title card, a combined map of the two games, and the map from Bright Lights, Neon City.

The list of locations below is not exhaustive, focusing only on plot relevant locations or canon locations. I've also included notes of where a location is plot relevant to a fic and which characters call their hometown, whether it's for OCs, canons, or mere headcanon. This also isn't meant to contain all the information I have on each place.

I have indicated where locations and their names are canon. If there is no such note, then the location is my own creation.

First Edition

Greater Meowtra #

The largest of the four continents of the B-daworld, Greater Meowtra is often simply called "the mainland" by both its residents and those of Meowlantis Island. It is divided into seven major nations (but not countries) with fairly loosely defined borders. Towns and cities on this continent tend to govern themselves, and the population is mostly human, catfolk, and robot.

Though the continent's history is marked heavily by war, it has, as of the time of Yamato Delgado's battle with the Shadow Alliance, largely become a peaceful land—one that harbors many dark secrets.

Other Continents #

Magistrate Atenai was one of Marda-B's disciples, the last one to join his traveling group. She was a priestess of the B-damage and primarily brought spiritual guidance to the group, only taking up her B-daman in order to protect the people of the Meowlantis Empire. Due to her strong sensitivity toward the B-damage, she was the one who suggested they seek out the Legend Stones, and Marda-B let her take the Life Stone.

In a twist of fate, Atenai would be the first to turn on Marda-B and her fellow disciples, denouncing them immediately after his death. She formed the Order of the B-daMage to right what she perceived were the wrongs Marda-B had brought to the world, particularly after his evil half began its activity in the B-daworld. She would allow the Life Stone to be passed down and fought for amongst the most pure-hearted of the Order.

Her age extended well into the 500s from a combination of the Life Stone with her natural lifespan, and though she is long dead, it is said her spirit still lives on even now...

The Shadow Alliance's in-house doctor, Arsen is one of the Shadow Alliance's founders and a retired elite who experiments with poisons for fun. He was once known as "the Winter Wind" to most other B-daplayers of his time and struck terror into many a B-Center combatant, and to this day he cuts an intimidating figure within the Shadow Alliance’s halls, terrifying recruits and elites alike.

Meticulous to a fault, he keeps extensive journals and manages a wide intelligence network both within and without the Shadow Alliance. He also keeps extensive journals about his life. He claims to be the creator of the Shadow Alliance subgroup the Hounds of Chaos. Until it was won from him by Gray, Arsen was the bearer of the Wind Stone .

His B-daman is Boreas, a white and light blue accuracy and rapid fire type B-daman with icicle-like spikes on its armor. It has a slot on its head for an emblem, a modification added by the Wind Stone itself. Its B-daballs are usually a light green color. Arsen's special attacks tend to utilize a mixture of wind and ice.

He is the father of Friya, Yannes, Arba, and Serine.

  • Title: Lord Winterwing

  • Affiliation: Shadow Alliance (former), Army of Chaos (current)

Arsen was a former officer of the Shadow Alliance, the formidable Lord Winterwing. He specialized in manipulating temperature aspects of the wind and a little of sound. He was feared both within and without the Shadow Alliance.

He survived the Shadow Alliance’s forced disbandment, and would go on to join the Army of Chaos, where he would be reunited with Nanashi. With all his prospects dead, he agreed to marrying her at her request. He would then join her in her assignment to sow discord across the upper levels of Vega City.

Shadeless and Endless #

Primary Timeline #

Arsen’s fate in the primary timeline is unambiguous like all other B-daplayers. As in most timelines where he survives the disbandment of the Shadow Alliance, Nanashi found him and they began to travel together. During the Neo Shadow Alliance’s attacks around the world, they were discovered by soldiers while en route to Neon City. Arsen was turned to stone in the ensuing battle, sacrificing himself to allow Nanashi to get away.

Branch Timelines #

In certain timelines, Arsen was able to break through the B-daspirit draining process using his own B-daspirit, allowing him to survive. However, his mind was severely damaged in the process, causing him to lose much of his cognitive ability. Consumed by guilt due to his sacrifice, Nanashi swore to care for him for the rest of her days after this.

Miscellaneous Worlds #

Flowers Bloom Until They Rot #

In this verse, Arsen was never a member of the Shadow Alliance. Instead, he was only Ababa's childhood sweetheart. He was present when Marda-B mind-controlled Ababa, shouting his name. He would not see Ababa again for another 40-50 years.

He barely hung onto his job as a doctor in this verse, which brought him to Laiken for a conference. He received an unsigned letter telling him to go to the Yong-Fa residence, where he found Ababa sitting on the porch. Once they recognized each other, Ababa’s memories returned and they were properly reunited.

Arsen was married to Nara in this verse.

Her parents, Arsen and Nara, are both Shadow Alliance founders, neither of which have openly acknowledged her as their daughter. The eldest daughter of House Charabine and raised from a young age with the knowledge she would one day marry the heir of the McDonnells, one of the most prestigious families in the Banques Region, Salome lived in a perfect world wherein she strove from childhood to become the perfect lady...a world shattered by betrayals in the days leading up to her wedding, when her fiance had her painted as a villainess and sent away to a branch family in distant Heltoon.

Though Salome initially thought to seek revenge, she quickly abandoned such schemes when she met Celestyn by chance. The two slowly struck up a romance, only for Celestyn to tragically meet his end as collateral damage in a scheme between his siblings. Salome spent the rest of her time in Heltoon consumed by her grief, only to fall victim to another of House Stasiak's schemes.

And then she woke up once more on the day after she met Celestyn. Though she would save him this time, he would once more die to other reasons. Over and over, Salome found herself reversing the clock, until she decided the only way through was to make Celestyn the Lord of House Stasiak himself—no matter who they had to fight to get him there.

They would eventually succeed after a lengthy battle, only to be one day killed by their own son, Arsen.

  • Element: Lightning
  • Alignment: Lawful Evil
  • Affiliation: Shadow Alliance
  • Rank: Grandmaster

The self-styled king of the hidden Electron City, Yannes is a formidable mage of his own making. The sole graduate of the final generation of children raised by Borgnine in the Shadow Alliance Orphanage, he holds the rank of Grandmaster within the Shadow Alliance and has killed many of his peers in his journey to the top. It was on the word of his father, Arsen, that he was given full control over the missions to attempt infiltrating the once impenetrable city. Despite a flair for theater and the dramatic, he rules the city with an iron fist, employing his closest confidants and dearest friends, Wings and Tuxnell, as his enforcers and agents.

Though more inclined to solving problems with magic, he still received a B-daman from the Shadow Alliance called Citrine Rose, a control type B-daman with ornate armor and bright red B-daballs.

Yannes has a natural talent for magic at an unprecedented level as he is able to learn almost any school of magic. Though this talent was discovered by Ababa quite early, Ababa still had him focus on a handful of types of magic first. Additionally, whether caused by or the cause of his unusual eyes, he also has an innate ability to see magic and B-dapsirit as an aura around its users.

During the Neo-Shadow Crisis, he turned over all the B-daplayers in Electron City to Biarce and Marda-B, hoping to be rewarded for his loyalty, only for his own B-daspirit to be taken as well. Despite this betrayal against his own subordinates, he was able to hold onto power after Marda-B's defeat.

Shadeless and Endless #

Primary Timeline #

As per usual timelines, during the Neo-Shadow Crisis, Yannes betrayed all the B-daplayers in his city in hopes of earning a seat at Marda-B's table. However, he had hidden away his two best friends, Wings and Tuxnell, and Biarce swiftly noted their absence. Biarce then harvested his B-daspirit as well.

As the Shadowland Region, which Electron City was part of, was haphazardly terraformed by Marda-B a few years into his reign, it's unknown if his statue remains intact.

Branch Timelines #

In certain timelines, rather than being harvested by Biarce, Yannes would be rewarded as he had hoped—though not in the way he expected. Marda-Biarce thus gave him a third eye and brought to New Meowlantis, where he would serve as an aide to Marda-Biarce and his generals.

Isgarren is an Idealist (and Mabon is a Cynic)

Created:

Yes I know the title sounds insane! But in the grand scheme of SotO's narrative, Isgarren is an idealist at heart wearing a cynic's armor, and Mabon is a cynic at heart wearing an idealist's mask.

And Isgarren is an idealist because you kind of have to be one to dedicate yourself to 10,000 years of protecting a world that doesn't even know you exist.

And one of the only things we know about him from before his ascension was that he tried to go help the mursaat fight Zhaitan anyway even after Sidony decided against helping them. Most of what he calls his mistakes were also born from his attempts to help others - taking in Eparch and ascending Waiting Sorrow being the biggest examples. And still he keeps helping others. Still, no matter how many times his attempts to better the world led to another "mistake", led to his own exile from his kin, led to the deaths of people he loved, Isgarren still kept doing it because he believed in doing good no matter what.

He figured out at some point that the Elder Dragons were vital to Tyria's magical ecosystem, so he turned his efforts to fight for the good of Tyria outward, especially once Eparch gave him reason to think all kryptis were threats. He wasn't going to step in with the Elder Dragon wars until it literally threatened the destruction of all Tyria not because he didn't care, but because he had faith in us.

Keep in mind that in the personal story, the Commander and Trahearne successfully united the world to fight Zhaitan. Isgarren had seen this before. He saw Sidony unite all the other elder races to fight Zhaitan, only for them to suddenly betray each other and leave the mursaat and Forgotten to die on their own. The Pact succeeded where the elder races failed. Why wouldn't he believe in the strength of mortals at that point?

Not to overuse and refer back to my favorite conversation in SotO too often, but Isgarren doesn't save farms not because he doesn't care, he doesn't save the farm because he knows the Commander will be there to have his back and do it while he takes care of the dragon minion.

Isgarren, for all his faults and his grumpy and bitter attitude, is an idealist.

Mabon called him naive for a reason. He even calls his own choices naive.

And speaking of Mabon...he's a cynic at heart.

This might seem contradictory to the way he is characterized as an optimistic and positive force among the Wizard's Court and for the Astral Ward (and he is), moreso than Isgarren being a hidden idealist under his sour armor, but consider that Mabon's entire character rides on his idea of atonement.

In his journal from shortly after his ascension, he doesn't remember what he was like before it. He just remembers that his own people are cruel and evil. He assumes Isgarren is avoiding him because he's afraid of him as a violent mursaat and never truly trusted him at all (when this could just as likely be because Isgarren is feeling guilty of the ascension wiping Mabon's memories, but that's just me speculating). He assumes that he must have been just like all other mursaat and he must have been a terrible person himself. So he must atone. And atone he does for 10,000 years.

Isgarren tells you, when you ask him about Mabon, that Mabon was not like other mursaat when they first met.

In SotO, Mabon's arc starts shortly before we meet him. Asthenes is attacking him mentally the whole time, but he puts on his outward mask of idealism and strength to save Dagda and Lyhr and to lead the Astral Ward while Isgarren is missing.

Knowing the Wizards, knowing the Commander, wouldn't we have found some way to save him too? If we knew? If we had realized? Isn't that what the Wizards and the Commander do? Wouldn't we have just made it possible to save Dagda, Lyhr, and Mabon?

Mabon didn't want to die, but he felt at that point "there is no other way this can end" and he outright asks us not to hesitate "when the hour arrives." He doesn't bother to ask for help with his own possession because he thinks he's beyond saving, and he needs to save the others first.

He also notably meddles with Tyrians more than Isgarren does. Many of the Astral Ward's recruits are his specifically. He travels to Tyria frequently to meet people and experience the world "on the ground", so to speak. Compare this to the historical mursaat modus of sitting back and manipulating an entire society unseen.

Even when it's someone Isgarren (and Uenno) recruits like Frode, it's not until Mabon involves himself that they heal and find their place in the Astral Ward.

That's not to say he didn't believe in mortals at all, just that as part of his trying to be a better person than he believed himself to be, he ended up taking it upon himself to help those he felt no one else would.

Finally, it's notable to me that both Isgarren and Mabon attempt to distance themselves from their races in some manner, and they both go about it in very different ways.

Isgarren made himself blue so he might be mistaken for a djinn at first glance but he still takes great pride in being a Seer. He wants to be seen as part of the rest of Tyria despite sitting above it, but will happily answer your questions about Seers.

Mabon hides his wings to be less threatening, but he's still very obviously a mursaat at first glance. He's still other from the rest of Tyria, but he distances himself from the other mursaat so much that he considers his own race extinct with Lazarus's death.

And somehow, it's so very fitting that these two found each other and created the Wizard's Court together.

Akeem and Lonely Tower

Created:

I went down a lore rabbit hole again. This is why I love Secrets of the Obscure so much: it's all rabbit holes. Shoutout as usual to @/icebrooding, my partner in crime when it comes to unearthing SotO lore and piecing it all together.

Let's go, another long post.

II: The Minister Illuminate

Akeem, the Wizard of the Obscure

The one who brings together our two worlds will die doing so; at the feet of a monstrous force, they will perish.

II: The Minister Illuminate

So. Akeem's tarot card says they will die "bringing together our two worlds".

Dagda: Mabon. Isgarren. Pick a god and thank her for your survival...
Mabon: Where are the others?
Dagda: Dead.
Isgarren: All of them?
Dagda: Akeem and Vass. Waiting Sorrow is fine, but... She's in shock. Won't speak. Or move.
Lonely Tower Fractal - Dialogue

And we know Akeem died during Eparch's invasion in Lonely Tower, alongside Vass or even trying to protect her.

(This just a guess based on the name of the Akeem's Sacrifice POI though, since we know Cerus and Deimos killed Vass but Dagda specifies only Vass and not Akeem in the dialogue that names them her killers. It's possible Eparch is the one who killed Akeem.)

You can probably see where I'm going with this: Akeem was experimenting with portals into the Mists and that's what led to Lonely Tower.

One more thing to possibly back this up:

The event chain that unlocks their tarot card has some interesting dialogue about the nature of the rifts between Nayos, but specifically I want to point to the second event in the chain which gives us this little bit:

Event start
Researcher Lezzi: Now we, uh...just need to find a way to close the rifts. Hehe.
Eparch: What's this, then? You dare peer into my domain?
Eparch: You flatter me. Allow us to give you a warm Nayos welcome.
Researcher Lezzi: Uh-oh...
Researcher Lezzi: You wouldn't happen to have any ideas, would you?
Researcher Lezzi: You have a rift-closing implement? Oh, you must let me study it!
Quickly disperse the unstable rift before it explodes

Eparch notices after some time that we are "peering into his domain". While events in Amnytas take place during the invasion that forms the backbone of base SotO's plot, so he would probably be paying attention to rifts opening from the Tyrian side--what if this is what happened with Akeem too?

Akeem was experimenting with portals into the Mists and then "peered" into Nayos a little too long and a little too often, so Eparch takes the opportunity to invade the Wizard's Tower with Cerus and Deimos and a section of their army.

INDIGO: As a small addition to Bobby's observations, Deimos came to Tyria with a mission: to help find ways for Eparch and the Kryptis to breach the Veil (which is what the Kryptis call the ethereal wall between the various realms of the Mists, including Tyria and Nayos). Some secrets may have yet to be told, but Eparch has looked to some very... nefarious tactics to find his way back to lsgarren, even before the events of Secrets of the Obscure. Saul just happened to be the perfect vessel for one of these splinter attacks, although Deimos's gluttony for suffering would prove dire.

ArenaNet Lore-Interview for the German Roleplay Community

But what if Akeem opening portals into Nayos was one of Eparch's "nefarious tricks"? What if they were being influenced from beyond the Veil? Or was it their natural curiosity and interests into "the obscure" that led to this?

The worst part?

Starting Defend Researcher Lezzi as she gathers information about rifts
You there! How did you get in here? Actually, wait, nevermind. I need your help. I may have discovered a way to maintain rifts to Nayos long enough to gather valuable data. Lend me a hand.
> Sure, but...is this safe?
> This seems like a bad idea.
Researcher Lezzi
Researcher Lezzi: I obtained vital data on the Nayos rifts.
Research Lead Ronald: You obtained vital...? I SPECIFICALLY TOLD YOU NOT TO TRIFLE WITH THOSE PORTALS
Researcher Lezzi: And yet, science marches on. That data will give us a huge advantage against the Kryptis. No need to thank me.
Escort Researcher Lezzi and her new data about Nayos

If Lezzi has managed to essentially recreate Akeem's experiments, it's possible there was no way to close the portals or rifts in Lonely Tower either other than using the other wizards' powers.

There is however one difference in this event and what happened in Lonely Tower: we have the Heart of the Obscure to close rifts.

And Waiting Sorrow created the Heart of the Obscure.

Perhaps she did so after Lonely Tower?

The Shield of Tyria #

There is one more thing about Akeem piercing the Veil I want to talk about.

> What is the Wizard's Court?
Mabon: We are protectors, not too dissimilar from yourself and your liege. Aurene.
Mabon: While you kept Tyria safe from the threat of the dragon cycle, we watched you from the clouds.
Mabon: Until recently, the World Spire has powered a shield that guarded this world from the Mists...to an extent.
Hell Breaks Loose

I suppose Isgarren wouldn't have gone along with the ritual if there was any lingering distrust between us, since it keeps us together for the foreseeable future. He could have also done it for his personal gain... His "World Spire" isn't complete, after all, and he needed another pair of hands to work with the shadowstone. I wouldn't have been able to help him if I hadn't gone through with it. At least I'm making an impact.

Aging Journal Entry
Isgarren: Nothing that sees this place stays away. And I've tried to keep them out for a long time.
Mabon: So that's the plan.
Isgarren: Mm. The dragons are a headache, but the demon realm is an infection. All of those pockets are.
Isgarren: The dragons could very well be the bacteria fighting off that infection, too. I don't know, but I need them alive.
Isgarren: I've no clue what Eparch wanted. But he wasn't happy when I booted him back to his bog.
Strength of the Unseen

Isgarren was already building the World Spire when he ascended Mabon, but the incident with Eparch and the centaur village solidified his resolve to keep the barrier between Nayos and Tyria firmly shut. That's what the World Spire is: Tyria's shield.

BOBBY: It's not closer to the Mists due to its altitude, but more because the metaphysical barrier that separates the Mists from physical Tyria had been breached via portals. Bastion of the Penitent, for example, is located in the Woodland Cascades north of Kryta. It's essentially below ground yet just as close to the Mists as the Horn of Maguuma due to the barrier between realms being compromised or otherwise weakened.

Kryptis don’t think and feel the same way as Tyrians, so when they make their first possession, they don't know how to process it. Higher Kryptis such as Cerus, Peitha, and Deimos had possessed many Tyrians by the time the wayfinder/commander encountered them, thus their inquisitive observations.

ArenaNet Lore-Interview for the German Roleplay Community

Now I want to call attention to two things here: that the barrier between realms was "compromised or otherwise weakened" and that "higher kryptis such as Cerus, Peitha, and Deimos had possessed many Tyrians".

Bringing It All Together #

Prior to the World Spire's completion, Eparch and his brother are able to physically make the jump from Nayos to Tyria. There was probably some natural barrier that has always existed here which makes it either difficult or dangerous for kryptis to do this en masse, and possibly the elder dragons themselves were part of that defense.

Isgarren completes the World Spire at some point with Mabon's help. This feels likely to me to be after Eparch and the centaur village. The World Spire bolsters Tyria's barrier to the Mists, but specifically against Nayos and other parts of the demon realm.

This may not have been 100% airtight, as kryptis could dream of Tyria and Eparch was possibly able to reach Akeem.

Akeem, whether under Eparch's influence or not, opened portals between Tyria and Nayos, bypassing the World Spire's shield and severely weakening it. Very likely one of their own portals is what Eparch used to invade the Wizard's Tower in the events of Lonely Tower.

After Lonely Tower, Isgarren and the other Wizards tighten the barrier once more, but the damage has been done and kryptis are occasionally able to cross the Veil. This is what allowed Cerus and Peitha to possess Tyrians. This is how Deimos crossed into Tyria to look for other ways to breach the Veil entirely. This is how Kanaxai ended up trapped in the Deep.

And then you get...well, the entire game. Everything from the Personal Story to End of Dragons happens and a metric ton of shenanigans happens with the Mists, all of which likely contributed further to weakening the Veil into Nayos, and each elder dragon's death was another likely defense down, and one of them started eating their way through the Mists and possibly even branded some kryptis along the way.

And then Soo-Won's death breaks it entirely.

Connections & Assumptions about the Noble Houses of Nayos

Created:

Making some connections and assumptions about the noble houses of Nayos

(and some history headcanons)

This is a big post compiling a good chunk of the ideas I've had from collecting Nayos lore and trying to put it all together. This is kind of all over the place but I tried to break it up a little into sections too. There is a lot of speculation in this post based on text from Secrets of the Obscure, and a section of headcanon at the end.

Deimos's Timeline #

So Deimos gives us a kind of baseline for how far back things mentioned as "ancient history" happens. Also, we know Deimos was the "young glaive" of House Nephus based on his plaque in the Amnytas museum, and at some point this same title was given to Cerus.

The young glaive of House Nephus. Deimos was trapped in Tyria during a failed incursion, using the guilt-ridden body of Saul D'Alessio as a host. Little did he know, the Bastion of the Penitent was originally built by Isgarren and later captured by the living mursaat to be used as a penitentiary. Deimos went along with the scheme, feasting on Saul's tormented soul until a group of explorers broke into the prison and cut down the Kryptis lord before he could escape.

Deimos

Saul founded the White Mantle roughly 300 years before the events of Bastion of the Penitent, and since Deimos had to be possessing him by the time he was imprisoned by Mursaat, then it's been over 300 years since Deimos left Nayos. Presumably Peitha and Cerus are of similar age to him, though I think of Deimos as the oldest of the three, or at least older than Cerus.

Cerus also has some kind of issue about Eparch seeing him as capable as Deimos.

Cerus: Febe was... Oh, he was the best of us. The tip of his left horn brushed the ceiling.
Isgarren: Wayfinder. Closer to me.
Cerus: He was an idol to... Oh, how would your kind say it?
Cerus: Autonomy?
Cerus: Deimos silenced his dream. Just over there. Eparch watched with a smile. That's what happens when you fight back.
Cerus: Even though my brother is...gone, his dream is mine.
Cerus: Eparch will see that Deimos and I are truly the same. I am just as capable.
Cerus: I've brought him the head of Isgarren!
Peitha: And what are you doing, Brother?
Peitha: Eparch will never look to you as he did Deimos.
Treachery

Which means it had to be over 300 years ago that Deimos killed Febe in the Temple of Febe.

Kanaxai's assassination of Lady Mosyn #

And thus it has to be much, much earlier than 300 years ago that Kanaxai executed Lady Mosyn during a public gathering of Kryptis, because Peitha was recognizably a "young one" at the time of this execution.

Mosyn's execution appears to have been the end of a sort of golden age for Kryptis society when they would create their own art rather than copy from other world. Based on how "debate" and "protest" were also part of what Mosyn led her house and the Kryptis in, I assume this era could be a kind of Kryptis equivalent to the Age of Enlightenment as it occurred IRL.

Febe's mentorship #

Febe appears to have continued Mosyn's work after her death, and this stretch of time was long enough for Peitha to grow into an adult. She sought out Febe at some point during this and he mentored her, likely leading to her radical thinking against Eparch that leads to the rebellion in the present time.

Up until Eparch had Deimos execute Febe too. In front of Cerus, who speaks very highly of Febe. To crush his spirits? "That's what happens when you fight back"? If not for Febe's execution, could Cerus have gone the same path as Peitha?

Incidentally, Kanaxai, and House Aurkus by extension, appear to have been Eparch's inquisitors or secret police. Aurkus himself was also the one who ordered Mosyn's execution.

Also, perhaps Deimos was the Glaive at the time, that Kanaxai mentions?

And I guess Kanaxai assassinating Mosyn and being an inquisitor is a reference to his class in GW1.

General Nephus's insurrection... #

Field Report 5 (Personal Copy)—On Nephus

I've heard the name Nephus bandied about a bit by Ramses and Peitha, but I'm never able to get the full context. As best as I can figure, he's a kind of Kryptis folk hero and is believed to live despite having some disagreements with Eparch. Ramses and Peitha both seem to respect him.

It seems unrealistic to me that an uncompromising ruler like Eparch would leave anyone alive who challenged him in any way; perhaps this is a form of Kryptis optimism or religion.

—Researcher Selly

Field Report (Heitor's Territory)

So, first, Grand General Nephus. A "folk hero" that the average villager looks up to. Said to be a "brilliant strategist" and a "peerless warrior" whose very name commands loyalty, and, if executed, would immediately become a martyr. He's essentially...the Commander but for Kryptis.

Peitha: What we need is someone that they respect, someone they will follow, even against Eparch.
Ramses: You mean General Nephus.
The War Council

We also know he was going to rebel, but Eparch stopped him before he could even start by publicly killing everyone who would have supported him. This, of course, is why he's so reluctant at first in the Forced Hand chapter, and only joins Peitha when Labris's arrival gives him no other choice.

Given the only public execution we know of was that of Mosyn, it's possible she was one of those killed because of Nephus, but I feel that takes away from her and the work she was doing. She was a public figure, a hero to the Kryptis, in her own right, and executed for her own "blasphemies" rather than for supporting Nephus.

Maybe Nephus's would-be insurrection was actually a much longer time ago? It would explain the way he is spoken of like a legendary figure, hidden and lost to all but a select few. Hundreds of years before Mosyn, Nephus saw and realized the beginnings of Eparch's tyranny, and meant to put a stop to it by reaching out to other nobles and generals who shared his sentiments, only to be faced with "mercy" as the only survivor of his rebellion. By the time of Mosyn's protests, Nephus was a beloved figure of Kryptis history, but locked away by both the King and his own despair.

Or perhaps closer instead? If it was closer in time to the current story, it could have been after Mosyn's death, as "the king's claws tightened on our throats" after the end of their golden age, as dreams started to dry up in Nayos, and the average Kryptis started looking for a new hero to believe in and they turned to Nephus, who sought out others of the same mind as him and looked to finish what began with Mosyn?

Either could work.

...and what it meant for House Nephus #

So what, then, is "House Nephus"? And how does it connect Peitha to Nephus?

We know from the other noble houses mentioned so far - House Aurkus and House Mosyn - that they take their names from their founders, so of course, it stands to reason that Nephus is the founder of this one. Each house also seems to have a role or predilection for one within Kryptis society - House Mosyn were artists and intellectuals, House Aurkus were inquisitors willing to do dirty work. House Nephus, perhaps, is a house of warriors and tacticians?

Peitha: I do not come to offer honeyed words. The truth is all he will hear and all I will offer.
Avatar of Gluttony: Move no further. And tell us, "great lady": What truth is that?
Peitha: That you all with join us in battle now or join us in death.
Incarnation of Judgement: If joining us in death is what you seek, step forward.
Peitha: Hold, sister. We share the same house, as I hope we will share enemies on the battlefield.
Forced Hand

Forced Hand gives us the only real interactions between Peitha and others of House Nephus. Peitha isn't welcome, because by this point she's known to be leading a rebellion and the last thing anyone of House Nephus wants is to let their General get involved in another one of those, on top of perhaps believing Peitha is here to kill him.

General Nephus: Hope is worth little in these times, Peitha. Of House Nephus.
Incarnation of Judgement: General!
Avatar of Gluttony: General Nephus! You're in danger—
General Nephus: It is the "great lady" who is in danger. I'm surprised you show your horns here.
General Nephus: Speak quickly, before Labris takes them as her trophy. I will not have yet another needless death on my conscience.
Peitha: Your concern is appreciated, General, as always. But I cannot leave until you hear my proposal.
Forced Hand

The next part of the above conversation implies Nephus and Peitha have some very slight familiarity with each other.

: General. Glad to have you on our side.
General Nephus: Peitha—Her Majesty—forced the issue. I tried to maintain neutrality, to not provoke Eparch. But it was time. Past time.
: She tends to get her way.
General Nephus: So I'm quickly learning. I'm pleased to have you as an arrow in our quiver. Your reputation precedes you.
Eventide's March

But it does seem like Nephus hasn't actually seen Peitha in a very, very long time.

Peitha: As I've never had the chance... I am Peitha, of House Nephus—though "houses" and titles given by Eparch are less than reputable.
Peitha: But in my world, it carries weight. We'll need that.
Eparch: Ah. There you are.
Eparch: I thought I felt something...different. It's fascinating, what you smell like. What you feel like.
Eparch: I'd hoped that Cerus was a smarter warrior than his brother, but... I've been wrong before, I'll admit that.
Eparch: You, though. Not only do you remind me of the seer, but... Your fear tastes like his.
Eparch: (laughs)
Eparch: Peitha has impressed me. But. She'll still fall short. They all do.
Eparch: Be wise, "Wayfinder".
Treachery

So maybe...Peitha and her brothers were actually placed into House Nephus by Eparch, not by Nephus's choosing or theirs, perhaps back when they were very young? Why House Nephus, though? Maybe because with Nephus hidden away, command of the house and the three siblings then falls entirely to Eparch and Labris?

So perhaps Peitha and the siblings are in House Nephus as a means to control them?

Bonus headcanons: Eparch's Nayos #

(and House Mosyn's place in it)

Mabon: The Kryptis are demons.
Mabon: They...evolved, learned. Their influence and power grew under the...guidance of their leader. Eparch.
Mabon: Centuries ago, Eparch wanted to join our ranks but Isgarren denied him entry. He found Eparch to be...ignorant. Hungry.
Mabon: Demons tend to be solitary creatures, but Eparch saw potential. Wells of power that they'd yet to tap into.
Mabon: He dubbed himself their king and built a society in his own image. One of fear and anger. Nayos, the Realm of Dreams.
Mabon: They've spent centuries watching us—and others. Learning all they can. Now, they've chosen to act.
Hell Breaks Loose

Ok, pure headcanon time. As we go deeper into Nayos, we meet more and more friendly Kryptis, or Kryptis so scared of both Eparch and the Astral Ward they just run away and hide no matter what. The villages though, seem to have this strong sense of community, and there are elderly Kryptis taking care of younger ones and being protective of their homes.

Something notable to me is that though the Astral Ward are there to assist Peitha's rebellion and do participate in fighting, a good amount of events in Nyedra and their interactions with the Kryptis are more about helping them bring aid to the average Kryptis. And as these events happen, the Kryptis come to welcome them despite initial misgivings.

And take note: in Forced Hand, when the fighting starts, several Kryptis flee into the safety of their homes. There are also villagers who will run and hide when events like the meta start.

>What have you learned of the native creatures here?

Everything here has been in an arms race for millennia. Claws and fangs got longer and sharper, and carapaces became thicker and spiked in response. Competition for Nayos's scarce resources is fierce.

>Sounds like everything is dangerous, then.

Very much so. But keep in mind that most of them are just animals without the spark of sentience. It's not their fault they are the way they are. They adapted to their environment, same as we did.

>What can you tell me about the local plant life?

Some of it is edible, if that's what you mean. I'd be careful if you're tempted to sample things, however. But what's more fascinating is how they've developed in the absence of the sun.

>What do you mean?

Well, plants in Tyria need a light source to grow. But in Nayos, they seem to have adapted to use the latent magic in the land instead. Perhaps that's how these trees reached such an impressive size.

Researcher Lanni

So maybe before Eparch's militant unification of Nayos under his banner, Kryptis society was composed of disparate villages. "Solitary" in the sense of competing for the "scarce resources" of Nayos. Each village did what it could to survive.

Visions of the Disquiet

As you pick up the piece of carapace, a flood of sensations fills your mind.

Purple flames rising. Scraping of sinew and bone. A banner of flesh on the horizon.

You have no idea what the Astral Ward will be able to make of this, but hopefully they can learn something from it.

Shattered Kryptis Carapace

Until Eparch decided he was to be king, and marched on each village and made them bow to him.

>Do you remember the time before Eparch was king?

Ah, I was young then and can recall little. But I remember the speeches, the crowds, and the promises of a new world. And I remember the executions.

>The executions?

They would march out a traitor—someone who had stolen from our kingdom or plotted against our people. They would eviscerate them, and the crowd would roar with approval. And then there'd be another.

>Only they weren't really traitors.

Some of them were, of course. But most were merely inconvenient to the nascent king. By the time we saw the spider's fangs bared above us...there was no one left who was strong enough to stop him.

Agathine

And those who didn't fall in line under Eparch's banner? Killed as traitors.

General Nephus: Labris is in a difficult position—she didn't expect to have to defend herself at Eventide's March.
General Nephus: I nearly suffered defeat here once myself during the Fourth Disquiet. It's not a particularly defensible position.
Eventide's March

Interestingly, Nephus tells us there were at least four "disquiets." With the Vision of the Disquiet above implying these were major military conflicts, maybe this means there were actually attempts by other groups of Kryptis to fight back against the establishment of the kingdom? Particularly since Nephus implies it was an attack on them instead.

Also a character headcanon - I like to think Nephus earned his title of Grand General during Eparch's takeover of Nayos and perhaps some of his guilt comes from helping to put Eparch on the very throne that would oppress the Kryptis he sought to protect.

All this is to say: I think Eparch's version of Nayos is entirely at odds with the Kryptis's actual nature - which is more community oriented than their world and their king affords them.

Enter House Mosyn.

Once the kingdom was established, Eparch doled out titles and noble houses to significant Kryptis. Despite what would happen later, one of these was Lady Mosyn, who cultivated a house built on creativity and culture and creating things rather than copying what they saw in dreams.

With the kingdom established into peace, this presumably meant villages now shared resources and soldiers now protected them, rather than needing to compete with each other to survive. In such an environment, Mosyn and the Kryptis who followed her had the chance to flourish and create culture now that survival was not a primary concern.

And of course, that is why Mosyn's assassination marked the beginning of Eparch's current tyranny.

Guild Wars 2 / GW2 Meta / Secrets of the Obscure /

The Four Great Houses of Nayos

Created:

(See my original post about kryptis noble houses for where I'm coming from for most of this, though a big chunk of the info there is outdated now.)

So Eparch's Nayos has four major houses: Nephus, Aurkus, Febe, and Mosyn are all named as the founders.

Several nobles also appear in the throne room. It's possible they are each indicative of a lesser house for each existing, perhaps ruling over territories across other parts of Nayos we haven't seen (and perhaps that means Heitor is of such a rank?)

That said, I think the four great houses provide an interesting split in responsibilities:

House Nephus and House Aurkus serve as military oriented houses, while House Febe and House Mosyn handle civil responsibilities.

House Nephus is fairly straightforward: it is composed of strong warriors and brilliant tacticians who would also go on to serve as officers of military. This was of course, run by Grand General Nephus, and its prominent members also include Deimos, Cerus, and Peitha, but with Nephus in exile from Zakiros alongside the rest of his house, it seems likely that Eparch and Labris placed the three siblings here in order to both give them status and to control them.

House Aurkus is composed of assassins and inquisitors, serving to root out dissent discretely and identify threats to the Midnight Throne before they take ground. Aurkus, as far as I can tell, has never appeared directly in-game, but mentions of him include him whispering in Eparch's ear or being horribly sadistic to inquisitorial targets. Kanaxai is, of course, the most prominent member of this house to us. There's also a subtle religious slant to this house in the use of "inquisitors"—Kanaxai's memory of Mosyn even calls her words blasphemies.

House Mosyn is composed of artists and creative talents. Mosyn herself was a singer and a painter, so we can extend these to the rest of the house. It's possible they also served as architects and builders for the kingdom. Mosyn is the only member of the house we know of, though it's possible there were some in-game simply left unstated. Mosyn was unfortunately assassinated by Kanaxai at Aurkus's orders.

House Febe is where things are a little nebulous. We have no clear indication of what role Febe held outside of his relationship with Mosyn, but based on the Temple of Febe and the way religion exists for kryptis as upholding Eparch and Labris as divine (the Thirst for Power book in particular invokes religious imagery for Labris as the "Mother of Nayos" using such things as a "chalice"), perhaps House Febe was the closest to clergy that the kryptis had? If so, they may also have facilitated intellectual pursuits alongside spiritual matters, making them suited to working with House Mosyn. As with House Mosyn, Febe is the only member of this house we know of with the possibility of unstated members. Despite his status under Eparch, he was an outspoken proponent of breaking away from Eparch's tyranny, up until Eparch had Deimos kill him in front of Cerus.

If my assumptions are correct, you could also then place Houses Nephus and Mosyn as largely secular while Houses Aurkus and Febe have more religious slants.
